Then at some point your business gained traction. The opportunities continued to grow, but so did the complexities of running the business.
Along the way, you may have become comfortable in certain roles such as being the ultimate decision maker, the go-to person for business processes, or just the person that seems to have all the right answers. Everyone wanted a piece of you!
Now there lies the problem—your strengths become your biggest weakness because they’re holding you back! The answer? Delegate!
At EOS we have a tool called the Delegate and Elevate Tool. Starting with the leadership team, everyone has an opportunity to delegate certain activities in order to elevate to their unique ability.
The goal is to spend most of your time in activities that will provide the greatest return for the organization, and then you should delegate everything else.
Why is this simple concept difficult for most people? Because they think delegation is a luxury or that no one else can do the work as well as they can. Both assumptions will hold you back as an individual, and they'll hold back the company.
Try giving it a whirl. The first step is to spend a week or so documenting everything that you do, from big to small. Just write it down. Then take everything from that list and transfer it to one of these four categories:
Once all the items are transferred into the appropriate category, begin brainstorming on how to delegate the things from categories 3 and 4.
Start small. Find one thing from category 3 and one thing from category 4 that you are willing to delegate. Then figure out how and when you will do it.
