EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) and my team at Nexus call this process, “Delegate and Elevate.” The first step to this simple process is to make sure you have the right people in the right seats (see my past posts What does it really mean to have Right People? and Is Your organization full of Rock Stars? that address this step). If you don’t have the right people in the right seats, then you really can’t delegate because your team can’t handle it. After you have fixed this, you can move on to the next step.
Now, you have to make sure you are always moving up and into the position you are uniquely gifted for. As we delegate the stuff that we aren’t very good at and or don’t like to do, we end up elevating the people below us as they are given new responsibilities. As they take on these new tasks, they also have to delegate some of their duties and move into what they love to do and are great at. You end up with everyone in your company being elevated to the level that the company needs. You will find some will need some training or assistance but at least you know it is to help them really hone in on what they are already good at. Everyone improves their skill set and they are doing what they love. Figure out what you love to do and are great at and delegate the rest. Your people are waiting.
